  1. @fake empire "The National on Letterman":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBujZr20O6M is a good video to watch to see what people are playing. You can also hear the horns very clearly at the end.

  2. if we're gonna go for instrumentation, i think islands, DMST, nick drake, and beirut fit the best (as well as songs i think we could actually pull off). i think the work is pretty cut out for these songs, and they wouldn't take too long to hammer out. for songs that would be fun to play, i've become quite infatuated with the grizzly bear song and midlake (also i'll toss up roscoe as a possibility). we could easily use trumpet for the flutey synth part in head home. dunno if anyone else has heard anything by the elephant 6 band, beulah. we could pretty much cover any of their songs, almost the same instrumentation we have and pretty simple parts. i'll play you guys some at next practice. @beach boys - it's a cool song, but like pete said, it's gonna be pretty hard for us to pull off well. might not be too engaging live either. would probably be better for us just to use as a learning exercise. @dr. dog - like this song too, but we'd have to add a lot of parts. think i can make out 2 guitars, keys, bass and drums? we'd have to write 2 other parts (banjo, guitar, 2ndary percussion, or a horn). would be a good exercise in practicing restrain for us though. @chris thile - hadn't heard this song at all before, but i'm digging it a lot. same thing as dr. dog, though. it's pretty minimal as far as instrumentation goes. is the strokes version less sparse? i'll have to try to find it later and take a listen. @constantines - the song keeps lagging/skipping/freezing for me. i'll try it again later, but from what i can hear it sounds pretty awesome and think it would be great live.

  3. Ok I think I fixed the errors, cross your fingers. This week I'll try to figure out a way to combine notifications so that if a bunch of comments/recordings are posted within an hour or so you only get one notification instead of a dozen. @heart in a cage: I always liked that song, never realized it was a cover of a Strokes song. I like all of the suggestions so far, we need to prioritize and select a couple to learn at first and move on from there.

  4. @ heart in a cage this is my second choice, just wanted to throw it out there because its got great vocal parts and would suit our sound well (banjo and whatnot). this is actually a cover of a strokes song, but i could care less which one style we lean toward, they're both great versions of the song.
